Exactly how long is a night anyway? September 14, 2011

“… weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” (Psalm 30:5)

How long is a night? Good question, difficult answer.  Our initial response to this question might be that ‘a night’ is about 7 or 8 hours long based on our understanding of a night. But therein is the rub, if you will.  Our understanding and our perception rarely aligns with what God is really saying to us.  He uses familiar images and nuances to communicate with our linear thinking but always beckons us to step out of this one-dimensional thinking and gain insight into His heart.  I have pondered this scripture for sometime now and have come to believe that perhaps it is more of a proclamation of faith rather than a statement of fact!  It’s not the length of the night that matters but rather the response of the morning.  We are time constrained and He is not.  We are formula motivated and He is not.  We think in black and white, He does not.

A night is as long as He determines but the response of the morning is our opportunity to demonstrate rejoicing without understanding, worshiping without answers, and hope without evidence.  We trust in His ultimate mercy…which by the way, is new every morning!  …His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning…” (Lam. 2:23)

The length of our night is up to Him, the response of the morning is up to us!

“…with my spirit within me will I seek you early…” (Isaiah 26:9)

Thank you Susan for your blog how long is a night. I have experienced a long night and have experienced His mercy new every morning just as the sun comes up new over the east coast ocean every morning. I pray much for you and Randy. I woke up this past week praying in tongues for Randy. Marvin and I love you and send you blessings! Love Rebecca
